Remote trans filter mount location?

I am adding a remote filter for my transmission and was wondering where the best location would be.

I just rebuilt a '92 4L60 to put in my car and I am adding the extra filter and an aux cooler as well. I pulled the '84 trans out yesterday and just need to finish wraping some wire before the rebuild goes in. I used a Monster in a Box kit and replaced all the bushings and bearings as well.

Any pics of where you guys mounted the aux filter and cooler would be cool to see. I considered having custom hard lines bent to fit, but it was kind of expensive. I may go back and do that at a later date.

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

What type of cooler is it,
tube and fin or plate ?

What are the dimensions ?

Can you give a link to it ?

Those will help suggesting a mounting point.

I have a plate type cooler. I plan on mounting it in the front of my radiator. I just don't know where I should mount the filter. I need to keep it away from the exhaust, and not far from the transmission lines. I don't want to have too much hose in there. Also, I know there has been some debate on the filter being added before or after the coolers. Any feed back on that would be good too.

The cooler dimensions are 11 in. x 11.625 in. x 0.75 in.

I also have a B&M remote transmission filter.

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

There usually is a lot of room in front of the radiator. Not so much elsewhere.

I would take advantage of that and mount the cooler in front of the radiator on the bottom on the passenger side and the filter right next to or over/under that. That way the hard stock transmission line that goes to the stock cooler will be just around the corner
You might have to use 90s of brass fittings in the hose to get nice sharp corners instead of trying to bend it in tight places.

Also there is a perfect steel ledge that runs across the bottom of the radiator to use to mount brackets.

My first attempt at installing a transmission/engine oil combination cooler with engine oil temp. controlled sandwich adapter just over the stock filter location was this = http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-15903

That's a 14 x 17in cooler.
That's 4 large hoses to deal with. I think I did a great job considering this is my first build.

Side note = I would think you would install the filter before the cooler.
Remove the particles before they enter the cooler.
Does anyone have a different view on the install ?

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

I got my cooler mounted in front of my radiator this past week. I still need to mount the filter.

I was thinking about mounting the filter in the line before the factory cooler. I noticed there are different schools of thought on where to mount that filter, before or after the oil cooler.

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

So you have the axillary cooler taking the fluid first before the stock one ?

In any case I would filter the fluid before it reaches ether one.

I don't think the fluid is moving fast enough to carry all, if any particles through both coolers.

I would not want my coolers acting as a filter. Particles if any could very well build up in a cooler so should be removed before.

The only reason I can think of "not" to mount it first is heat.

I'm not a expert on the subject so if there is one please speak up with your opinion .

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

My fluid flow is from the transmission to the factory cooler then the aux cooler and back into the transmission. I think I will add the filter between the transmission and factory cooler.

I talked to a couple friends of mine that are transmission rebuilders, and they were split down the middle on the best place for the filter to be placed. In fact, it got kinda heated. He he.

I may make a bracket to mount the filter near the battery.

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

I added an auxillary filter(strainer actually,an airplane part)on the "out"cooler line and it caught a lot of debris when my aftermarket torque converter lunched it's thrust bearing.

Re: Remote trans filter mount location?

I ended up mounting my remote trans filter in the fender well under the battery tray. It was close to the factory cooler inlet and also allows for easy filter replacement. I may add a plastic cover over the top of the filter to protect it from any battery acid that could leak down to it. I don't think it will be a pressing issue for now though.
