Rear end help

So I took my camaro through the field, did half a donut and my rear end "blew" out it was making a horrible grinding noise and shuttering. It simply would not move. I pulled it back and it pushed it into place while fluttering the clutch and it engaged again and it now will once again drive under its own power. I beleive it's a gm 7.5 with 3.73 gears, 26 spline. I found master bearing rebuild kits for varying prices on ebay and other sites.

What exactly is your opinions on my issue? I think the shims may be out of place, messed up. Will any of these kits fix my issue? Also, do I need one specifically for the 3.73 gears or can I swap a 3.42 kit in?

Here's a few links to what I was looking at:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360868274536...984.m1423.l264

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281306725292...84.m1423.l2649

Also would this ring and pinion set fit if needed?

I was looking at those rebuild sets and honestly nothing seemed different other then the price? I thought the kit would fit either.. I'm hoping the cheaper of the two would fit, as I'm planning on a 12 bolt or 9 inch but it needs to wait quite awhile, and 80 bucks for fixing what I have.. Well I can't pass it up.

Re: Rear end help

You might try one of the auto parts stores for the kit you need. They'll lend you the tools, too, free, with a deposit refundable on return. I priced them when my diff blew out, and the parts stores were least expensive.

Have you opened the diff? Is there loose metal in there (low torque lash)? Is the spider gear worn? Is there a hole in the housing? Is there fluid in there or is it dry? Replacing the guts on a diff is a complex & precision job that requires special tools; I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner.

Re: Rear end help

Haven't opened the dif yet, I'm right in the middle of an engine swap on an 04 cavalier. If there's a tool that I don't have or the garage I work at doesn't have, I'll go to advanced auto and rent it. I'm an entry level mechanic, I feel fully capable of the job, as I said I'm just looking for advice. Being a mechanic I refuse to pay another mechanic to do a job I feel like I can do. Hoping to pull the cover off tomorrow and see what goodies I find in there.

Anyone have input on the rebuild kit?

Re: Rear end help

The ebay listings cover third gen Camaros, so it should work. Being a no-name product, the questions to ask are: How well? And for how long?

Yukon master kits have received good reviews. IIRC they are available through Summit.

Being a mechanic, sometimes it is worth my time and money to pay someone with skill and experience to do something I could do. But, it is something they do more frequently than I do, therefore they can do better and quicker. Cheap, good and fast. Pick two... at most. DIY is cheaper as long as you do not have to redo it. Cheap parts are cheaper until they howl, burn up after 100 miles and have to be redone.

Your description sounds like you wiped some teeth off the ring gear, so the parts you are looking at appear to be what you will need. If there is additional damage you might need additional parts.

Re: Rear end help

A rear end almost never quits working and then starts working again. I'm not sure that you have a rear end problem. Seems more like a clutch problem to me.

If it is the rear end then contact this ebay seller for high quality Yukon parts and everything else that you might need. http://www.ebay.com/usr/monzaz?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 The kits that you have listed above are junk.

Also follow this thread for information on how to install the gears and set them up correctly. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...axle-gear.html This is NOT a bolt in job. It requires shimming and precision measurements.

Re: Rear end help

I'm positive it's the rear end, the driveshaft is spinning as it should when it's engaged and all gears function, also as I noted the rear end was making noise until it "engaged" again. I'm going to check it out further here shortly.

Re: Rear end help

Actually, sounds more like one or more of the small gears inside the carrier shattered. I've had them do something about like that before for that reason.

Pull the cover and look.

To paraphrase a truism that is a truism because it's true:

A look is worth 1000 posts on the Internet

Re: Rear end help

I found a replacement rear for it but it's damn near 4 hours away. I'm almost thinking about just putting it in and rebuilding the other for a spare when I'm not as pressed on time. I'm sure I'll end up needing it.
