Which tranny do I have

Quick question. How can I tell what tyranny I have. 83 trans am automatic stock 4 barrel.

I restored the car pulled engine and tranny and went through the engine. That runs strong. Now when I go to drive it and give it any gas it bogs down and shifts weird,I've only. Driven it a couple miles. I did notice that when I checked the fluid with the car hot and running fluid didn't even register on the dip stick. Father in law said he filled it. Guess I should have done it myself. Any tips? 75k original miles.

Thank you.

I believe it's a 700R4. Make sure to check it hot and in neutral. If it doesn't register, fill it 1/2 quart at a time, shift thru all the gears slowly, then back to neutral and check it again. Repeat that until it reads where it should.

Re: Which tranny do I have

GM specifies that the fluid be checked in Park and not neutral.

It probably doesn't change the fluid level reading on the dipstick very much, but in Park the low/reverse clutches are applied (nothing is applied in neutral) so there is fluid flowing in that circuit.
