I have a 1988 Trans am, TBI 5.0, 700R4. Car has been in a hanger for over 14 years only has 100k on the odometer. I never started it. I trailer it home drained all the fluids did all the maintenance on it but as far as the transmission goes, I drained the fluid. New filter, fluid, shift cable and checked the TV adjustment and that's about it (yes the fluid level is correct). Car only has first and reverse. The only forward gear I have is first gear regardless of the position of the shifter in the gear selector. when engaging any gear from park or neutral with the brakes applied it feels really firm. When moving the shifter to first gear on the selector, the above applies however there is a whining noise, move the shifter to second the above applies however the whining noise is still audible but not as load, move to shifter to drive the above applies but no whining. Would this be a governor issue? Any other things i could check? Thanks
Does the transmission try to make a 1-2 shift or does it just stay in 1st?

Remove the governor. Make sure the governor drive gears are still there. Check the governor weights and make sure they're free.
Seems to be a common problem when the car sits for an extended length of time.
Yes, this is most likely the governor as stated above. An easy fix.

Depending on the angle of the trans when you pull it, there might be as little as a few drops to as much as a quart from my experience. I would not bother draining fluid beforehand. Getting the cover off will probably be the tough part. And then back on squarely since it's not easy to access the top half of the cover with the trans in the car.

I got the governor out, gear shaft broke at the roll pin. The governor needed to be tapped out (stuck) I had another problem my speedo didn't work, the buffer box the cluster ect all tested good, after I pulled the speedo from the tail shaft I didn't see a gear on the shaft so I removed the tailshaft to see the gear just floating and the clip on the bottom of the hosing. I order a new governor gear, cover and seal. Hopfully getting the cover back on won't be to hard.
