Speedometer drive gear slipped
My speedometer stopped working. In troubleshooting I found the drive gear had slid down and was not longer in contact with the VSS gear. Any suggestions on how to properly locate the drive gear back into position and then how to prevent this from happening again? I do not see any physical barrier that would prevent this from happening again.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Speedometer drive gear slipped
There is a spring clip that prevents the gear from moving. It fits into a hole in the output shaft and sorta' cradles the drive gear.
Note that there are two holes in the output shaft, the hole that is further toward the front of the car is the one to use (the hole toward the rear of the car is for Corvettes only).

I got the clip, problem is the gear slipped al the way forward. Any suggestions on how to slip the gear back? There is no room to get much in there.

Re: Speedometer drive gear slipped
I have used a pair of long screwdrivers/prybars and pry EVENLY on both sides (like 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock) towards the rear. If you don't do it evenly, you will split the gear and need a new one. I typically use a long screwdriver and hammer to remove the gears during an overhaul, but I know I might crack the gear and I have time to get another, plus I have quite a few laying around anyway. I suppose you could fabricate a "U" shaped piece of metal that you could attach a slide hammer to and slide it back that way....
also be careful about prying on the edges of the teeth, they like to break off. A little missing is ok, since the 2 gears mostly touch in the center, but just a 'heads up'.

Re: Speedometer drive gear slipped
Take off the tailshaft, that requires driveshaft removal also.
Its the easiest way to deal with the gear/ new clip.

Yes, what TTOP350 says, I was thinking you already would have had the driveshaft out and tail housing removed.....
