700R4 Shift points/rebuild
My friend just had his transmission rebuilt and they changed his shift points and I was wondering how they change the shift points is it a simple adjustment or a total tear apart, and his tach is broken and it sounds like they made it shift at what sounds like 3000-3500 normal acceleration and if you floor it, it will shift at about 4000 or higher. Personally I think this is to high and will hurt his performance and fuel economy, keep in mind the car is stock. Any opinions would be appreciated. (I forgot his car is a 1985 camaro TPI 305 auto)

i'm not an expert by any stretch of the matter, however, i think more info on the car is necessary. my 350 TPI had a shift kit in it and shifter similar to those points, maybe slightly lower on the normal side but not much if any. and on the flooring it side probably around there or slightly higher no more than 4500, that's really where TPI falls on its face. but it really depends on the setup of the car, is it a car that makes all it's power low or is it mid range power or all top end. it has a lot to do with the setup. so with more information on the car you will probably get more ansers IMO
edit: sry i see now you say it's a 305 TPI. i dont think it will hurt perfomance any but since it is shifting higher in the power band it will lose gas mileage but if you buy V8's for gas mileage you might want to consider another route.

You can fix that very easily by adjusting the throttle valve cable that is attached to the throttle body. Follow the instructions in a Chilton's or Haynes Manual and you can "dial in" the shift points to your liking.

First, make sure that the TV cable is set correctly. If you still feel the need to change the shift points, you'll need to something like these:

Like others have warned, the cable is not there to adjust shift points.
IMO, without knowing the engine speed at which the shifts are occurring, you're just guessing. There might not be anything wrong with where the transmission is shifting.
You CAN go by road speed but you'll need to know what model 700R4 transmission you have and the shift speed chart from the factory service manual.
