donor car questions [1991 rs]
a friend of mine has a buddy with a rusted out 1991 RS
i got an 82 berlinetta with a 400sbc and i was wondering if i might be able to pull any parts off it
manly did the 91rs ever come with:
110mph spedo cluster, a 700r4 [overdrive] or posi track/lsd

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: donor car questions [1991 rs]
About the only parts on that car worth scabbing, are the axles (28 spline compared to your 26) and the spindles (less modification required to put semi-modern brakes on it). The transmission might be, if the 700 is what you're looking for; in which case, get EVERY piece related to it. Trans, crossmember, torque arm & mount, etc.

Re: donor car questions [1991 rs]
i get my pick of the car for 150 [from what i heard] the rest is time.
is a 700 much better than a 350?
i assume it would for interstate ...but for power it has a lower 1st gear so quicker take off right?
im new to all this.

Re: donor car questions [1991 rs]
The 700r4 is an overdrive trans. The 1st gear is 3.06 which is much lower than others and yes will "take off" faster/harder, but the gear spacing between 1 and 2 is wide and you drop alot of RPM when you go to second gear.. Also with 1st being so deep it can cause major traction probs on high HP builds.
The '91 gauge panel will not fit your '82.. Not as a direct swap as the '91 is diff shape/layout.
There is many things on the '91 worth pulling for the $150 price though
The ground effects are worth much more than $150
The trans, crossmember, torque arm, driveshaft
Rear end/axle housing
Console, seats if any good
Dash pad if good
Hood and hatch struts if good/holds hood/hatch up

so witch is better if you want to race it?
ie if everything was the same but 350 turbo vs 700r4
who would win in 0-60 or 1/4mi ?

Re: donor car questions [1991 rs]
It's not that black and white. I wish it was, it would make it so much easier lol.
If you have a high rear gear the 700r4 would net you better times.
If you have the correct rear gear for racing and your combo then the 700r4 will cause more tire spin and will need even better suspension and tires
The gear drop can be good or bad. If you have a mis matched engine combo or one that makes more power lower in the band then the 1-2 spacing of 700r4 will keep you in the power band longer
But if you are building a correct drag car with right parts, etc then the th-350 will be faster of the 2 and run the numbers time and time again. Also the th-350 weighs less

Re: donor car questions [1991 rs]
'82 had 26 spline axles instead of the later 28 spline axles. '82 has the 7 1/2 inch ring gear and the later one has a 7 5/8 ring gear. I'm not sure but I think the '91 had the 4 bolt pattern on the backing plates instead of the triangle shaped bracket on the earlier housings. This gives you more brake options. I'm not sure, but I've been told that the later housing is stronger.
