auto to manual swap

I have an 89 trans am 305 auto. I am looking to convert to a manual trans. I have done this swap on my 68 and 81 camaros in the past but not on a gen 3. I have a spare muncie 4 speed which i am told will not work. is that right? What manual trans' work for this swap and which vehicles can i scavenge them from?
Thank you.

Re: auto to manual swap

I would look for a upull junkyard, and get a 4th gen t5. If you have a v8, obviously try to get one from a v8, the bellhousings aren't interchangeable. As far as i know, ALL the 4th gen v8's are WC t5's, for what that's worth.
As far as the muncie, I have heard that the gearbox will line up to a Camaro style bellhousing, with some work. The difference is that the Camaro bells are angled towards the driver.

This is the basic article to to the swap, but since you've done it on gen 1 and 2, it's kinda the same.

I'm not sure where you got your information, but exactly ZERO 4th gens came from the factory with a V8 & a T-5.

Unfortunately, the F-body transmissions & bellhousings are unique to F-bodies, so you need to find an F-body donor car.

T-5 is the transmission you want. If you have a V8 you should really try to find a V8 trans, if you have a V6, a V6 trans.

They upgraded the design in 85 I believe to a world class T-5, so if you have the choice, go with a later transmission, although in a pinch an older one will work, and will fit in the car the same, but will be weaker.

yea, I was halfway asleep on the 4th gen bit, I was thinking of the v6's, my bad.
If I post anything past 730pm, I'm probably overtired and wrong.

Hahaha, no worries I have been there. Decide to jump on the forums late at night when I'm tired and/or drunk, post something silly.
