Broken flex plate

Hey guys. So i definitely cracked/destroyed my flex plate. But im not sure if more damaged was caused.

Since i bought the car the transmission has shifted pretty hard. It has 112k on it, paired with an lo3 305 tbi. Today i floored it and suddenly it bogged down and i started hearing a clicking. Clicking i now know is the flex plate considering i cant even start the car anymore. The starter just spins and you can hear a light grinding.

However while it was running it also wouldnt down shift. I could completely floor it and it would just hang at 2000 rpms and VERY slowly accelerate. When giving it any amount of throttle would not down shift like its supposed to under load. Not sure howq else to explain it accept that the car accelerated really slowly, like it had 50hp.

Is this a seperate issue or could the broken flex plate cause this?

Re: Broken flex plate

Prolly 2 separate issues; can't imagine how anything about a flex plate could conceivably cause a low-power problem like that.

Re: Broken flex plate

i had the center tear out of the flexplate in a 92 Caprice 9C1 that i used to have: the whole center broker out about 1/4" outside of the bolts that held it to the crank.. it drove fine, but made a ticking noise. i still have that flexplate somewhere because i thought it was cool the way it broke..

I've had this happen on two of my street rods through the years, sounds a lot like a rod knock too.

Re: Broken flex plate

Yup; gotta be the most common way for em to fail. We'll probably never know how many cars have been scrapped for making that noise.

Re: Broken flex plate

Yeah. I knew it wasnt a knock in the motor based mostly on the particular sound it made. It was a very random tapping, not a rythmic tap like a motor would make.

That and my Transmission started fudging up and the starter just spins.
