Clutch fork too long

I am converting my automatic 1989 trans am to a t5. I seem to have the wrong clutch fork. The car I got the set up from was an 82 manual clutch. I got 4th gen a hydraulic clutch system/ pedals and a hydraulic bell housing. All was going good till the clutch fork sticks too far out. Is the hydraulic clutch fork shorter? What years used it? Any other vehicles interchange? Thank you

Re: Clutch fork too long

Yes the hyd clutch fork is different from the old Stone Age linkage type. Not positive what all the differences are, but one would certainly have to be the length.

84-92 Camaro/Firebird V8 is the only application I know of for sure that will interchange. 6-cyl probably will too but I don't know that for positively sure.

Hold onto that other fork and see if you can get the rest of the 82-83 setup that goes with it. Some "greater fool" will surely come along and stupidly reward you handsomely for it.

Re: Clutch fork too long

An 84-92 V8 bellhousing requires an 84-92 V8 clutch fork.

The 82-83 clutch fork fits other GM 153 tooth flywheel applications.

The 84-92 fork is probably a bit shorter (I'm not going outside to measure right now) but more importantly, the pivot stud location in the bellhousing is different. THAT will make an 82-83 fork sit further out in an 84-92 bellhousing.

Fourth gen pedals have the master cylinder stud higher up and therefore have less "travel" than third gen pedals. So you may have a problem there.

Re: Clutch fork too long

The hyd fork would have to be shorter... the Z-bar type starts out next to the block, whereas the hyd slave cyl is mounted to the bell housing inside of the edge of the BH... that setup is all tucked in about an inch or an inch and a half closer to the trans. The fork would have to be around an inch or so shorter as a result.

I never compared em... I just threw that old crap off my 83 in the trash when I was first able to get a hyd setup out of a totally destroyed 84 in a junkyard to replace it, in about 86 or 87. I was SO GLAD to get rid of that old stuff; after over a decade of driving 4-speeds and fighting that Neanderthal garbage, all I wanted was to make it GO AWAY and put something modern in there. That was the 2nd mod I did to the car; the 1st was a Hurst Comp Plus shifter. Not sure which one was more effective at improving the car, but I will say, they both were a HHHHUUUUUJJJJJJJJE step up.

Re: Clutch fork too long

See post #3. Too hot outside. Junkyarding this morning was fun though.
Oh, and I'd have to put the T5 together. And pull the T56. On the bright side, linkage, clutch and flywheel would stay the same.

Re: Clutch fork too long

Thanks so much for the input. Got the fork for 84-92 hydraulic coming in the mail(looks completely different, much shorter). Whew, was not super easy to find. Anxious to get this thing back on the road with a 5 speed.
