gears for a 87 iroc

i have a 87 iroc with 2.73's right now i got the tpi 305 ho i am building up the car and thought gears would be a good stock i heard 4.10s are good gearsi am not realy worried about top speed i want to be able to take off on the start right now i can take most 350s in the long run but every car takes me off the start and it dont spin tire so i need a good set of gears and need to know how good they will take off on the start and a normal top speed or close thanks

With a mildly modified 305 and street tires, 3.42 or 3.73 gears are a better choice.

You will need to do a simple test to determine the best rear gear for acceleration, for your car. Run through a measured 1/4 mile
and observe the mph and rpm (in drive) as you cross the finish.
Divide your present gear ratio by the observed rpm and multiply
by the rated rpm @ peak horsepower.(assumes a stock motor)

eg: gear ratio 2.73:1, rpm @ end of 1/4 mile 3516, rpm @ rated
peak hp 4800

2.73 / 3516 X 4800 = 3.726

3.73 would be the best gear

This assumes that you have good traction to put the improved torque to the ground.

You may need a set of BFG drag radials of the same height as your present tires to get the effect your looking for.
