c-clip axle making clunking noise
i have a 10 bolt posi out of a 86 camaro disk breaks. (i did the conversion). so i rebuilt my reared after it blew the spider gears. dropped down to some 3.73's. now i know c-clip style axles arent the best and i know there is some play in the axels when its all assembled.
recently its been clunking really hard when i make a turn (shifting the weight of the car causes the axles to shift i understand). but the noise is only coming from the passenger side axle. so i took the cover off and pulled the axle out and everything looks good except for the pin that goes through the carrier. it is warn mabe.... (.020) thousands from the axle hitting it. but the other side looks perfect. why is this happening? how can i fix it? do they make c-clip eliminators for the chevy 10 bolts?

Re: c-clip axle making clunking noise
What you have is a worn out Auburn limited slip differential. The Auburn uses cones, and as the cones wear they move deeper into the differential case. This increases the distance between the face of the axle gear and the cross shaft, which also increases the axle end play. It has nothing to do with the axle or c clip. The only way to correct it is to trash the Auburn and replace it with something good, like an Eaton Posi, Eaton Truetrac, Yukon dura Grip or another quality differential.

thank you very much. i did not know that about the Auburns. now i can stop chasing the problem and just get it fixed.
