700r4 questions
i have a 1986 iroc z28 305 with 700r4 auto with overdrive,
Does my tranny already have a shift kit?
What tools will I need to remove and rebuild this tranny on my own?
I think the whole issue with the transmission is fluid level. but I lost 3.4 gears and had to drive about 20 miles on 2nd gear high rpm. I figure this overheated the transmissions seals and such, I plan to buy a manual and rebuild it.
will SummitRacings 70233 Rebuild kit $300 have everything I need or will I have to find some more things for other parts that I should rebuild while doing this.
thanks for all the help.

Re: 700r4 questions
I'm not a trans guy but I know enough to help you some.
If your trans is stock... No it does not have a 'shift kit' in it.
Shift kits for the most part just mods the valve body by changing the fluid path, pressure, etc with stiffer spring, check ball moved, a hole drilled out, etc.
These "mods" are done to your factory valve body with the use of a new modded plate, some new springs, etc
That rebuild kit is just a drop in the bucket for the parts you need for a full rebuild. It's just the 'soft parts' gaskets, seals, and the steels and frictions.
No pump parts... The pump is the major part here.. It would be like putting new rings on your engine's pistons and keeping the same old worn oil pump
No servo, boost valve, sun gear shell etc.
Trans kits bought from summit will kill you price wise.
Check out bulkpart.com A kit about like you linked to will run around $130
They also sell "rebuilds in a box" which will give you all the needed parts for $400-600 depending on upgrades you want

Re: 700r4 questions
Basic hand tools will get the transmission out and back in the chassis.
The rest depends on how much you want to struggle using improvised tools. I don't like to struggle; I spent a lot of time collecting spring compressors, lock ring pliers, bushing drivers, a transmission jack and building a small portable work bench (so I wouldn't have to lift a 200lb. transmission all over my garage). I have a couple of cars with GM RWD overdrives so I'll get to use these tools at least once more in my lifetime.

I suggest you search You Tube and watch some of the rebuild videos that Hiram Gutierrez has done for the 700R4/4L60/4L60E (essentially the same trans as the 700R4). Do this as an assessment exercise if you're still thinking about DIY.
IMO, this is not a DIY for the feint of heart. Because of the tremendous amount of time, money and labor it's not something that is done half-way or with corner cutting. You definitely do not want to be R&R'ing the trans more than once or constantly dropping the pan or scratching your head wondering if you did this or that correctly if the rebuild goes south.
As far as manuals go, get one on these

Don't get hung up on the price. These kits are complete. You'll be rebuilding everything from front to back. The kit contents are chosen to work together as a system and it comes with a lot of tech support.
You can also read Pro-Built's tech forum as a homework exercise:

Factor in a new/rebuild torque converter in the price replacement parts as well.
