1992 Camaro 700R4 Shift light

My brother just got a 92 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI and an automatic. It just started illuminating a up-shift light once it goes into third, and stays on until he lifts his foot off the gas pedal. Then comes back on when the gas is pushed again. Any idea what could cause this? I have never seen anything like this on my 87 Sport Coupe, and a search didn't turn anything up. Thanks

My '91 had it, but it was a 5 speed car, and was, indeed, and up-shift light. Used for both economy and max rpm.

Not sure why it would illuminate on an auto trans car.

Hi 87cam305. Probably has been converted to auto from standard. The upshift light also serves as the torque convertor lockup control wire. Somebody must not have known to fix that.

What the fan of 1701 posted, it is showing that the TCC is locked up. Need to remove the bulb.

It is a original automatic car. I knew what the light is for on a manual car, So I guess it could be possible that the cluster was swapped from a manual car?

So the light is completing the circuit and locking the converter up? how does the converter lock up for overdrive if the bulb is not there.

The light bulb is not required to lockup the TCC. On the TBI cars the TCC output from the ECM is used for both the shift light and TCC lockup. So the stick shift cars have the bulb in the dash to show when to shift for best economy.

The auto equipped cars the factory left the bulb out. You can remove it or leave it in place, doesn't matter to the ECM or affect TCC lockup.
