Gas splash back when filling up
Gas splash back when filling up
Hey guys, kinda new here but always had an fbody in my life, I have a 87 gta 5.7, Few years ago I have to replace my fuel tank, the original was getting rusted pretty good, the previous owner had just let it sit. Ofcourse I put in a spectra tank, the filler neck was off alittle but was able to get that fixed. My question is no matter how full or empty my tank is when I go to put gas in I can just barley squeeze the handle or it will cut right back off or gas will splash right back out, doesn't seem to be a vent problem I checked that, just cant figure whats up with that. Just have to baby sit it and squeeze very slowly to fill up. Anybody got any suggestions?? Thanks in advance

Could be a clogged charcoal canister.

I think it could be a vent problem or the way the filler neck is shaped. Maybe you can adjust the filler neck. My family owned a gas station and certain nozzles would always kick off like you are saying, it was cause by the venting of the nozzle
Re: Gas splash back when filling up
Thanks guys for the replies, I'm pretty sure its not the canister, ive taken the line off and blown air into it both ways toward the tank and canister, no restrictions at least none I can see or hear. I can hear the air coming out of the canister and I can hear going into the tank when I blow into either, I honestly think its something with the neck or tank, didn't do it with the original tank, the neck is centered in the hole so really isn't much room for adjustment. Didn't know if anyone else has had this problem.

I think its the neck or the vent or both.
Re: Gas splash back when filling up
Well I might have an update, yesterday after doing some reading I took a small punch and tapped 2 vent holes inside the filler neck where you insert the nozzle I went and put 10 dollars in and this time I could actually squeeze about 3/4 of the way and let it run, it cut off like twice but didn't splash back, not sure if just a coincidence or I actually fixed it, ill fill up at another station in the next day or so and see what happens

I've been having this same problem. It's a real pain trying to put gas in without it spilling all over the car when it kicks back. Hope that fixes it for you!

Well i topped off today better but not where i like it it still cuts off i can only squeeze maybe 1/2 way which is a while lot better not getting gas all over the side of the car. Might try to enlarge the vent holes i made the other day and see what happens
Re: Gas splash back when filling up
Well i have filled up several times now, the vent holes did help, i can squeeze the handle like half way with out any drama, i did squeeze it wide open actually did run for a sec but cut off but not splash back. Not 100% where i like it to be but a whole lot better than it was. Hope this helps somebody
