PLEASE discuss trans choice
I wanted a 1200-HP 4.8L LSx with a 4L80E, couldn't afford the tune, nor the trans, and still can't. But now I'm turning m '86 Camaro into a "Baja" build, so it still needs a reliable, unbreakable trans that won't leave me stranded 500 miles from any help.
I have a 2WD SM465. Still readily available for under $150. The 1.5" input shaft can be done for under $100. That makes it strong enough to hold 2000 ft/lbs TQ input. It really is that strong. and even with the iron case, it's still lighter than the 700R-4. Not in high demand, but the shifter is awfully far forward. I know what to do about that.
I can do it, I want to give this option to everyone wanting big power in these cars cheaply, and I want to be known and thanked for doing so.
But the SM465 hangs low. Not a problem at the dragstrip, nor for careful street driving. Not a problem for a lifted 4x4 either. But could be a problem for my plans.
I've hurt enough 700R-4s now, and 4L60Es, with low power, to be scared of one leaving me stranded. But the ratios are perfect for me, the pan is nearly begging for a skid-plate, and it's non-computer.
I could adapt a Ford 5R110W, it has even better gearing, but I have no idea of a near-free way to get it shifting right with a carbureted 350. If anyone can help with that, then I'll do that. It'll be universes better than a 4L80E.
