people who have the slp $99 posi

As a replacement for my 91 Z, would it be a good investment? Right now the stock posi is worn out and i hear the Zexel Torsen is a bit heavier duty than my old one. TIA

I dont have it but I think it is what they put in the z-28s and T/As that had either the 305-310 horse. The slp cars(SS and Ram Air) got a stronger one. I think it costs 300 or 400.

On my 91Z since I have the g80 and g92 options would this make a direct replacement, without adapting or modifying it?

My friend has one in his 91 Firebird and I have one in my 95 S10 SS too. They are diresct fit for the 7.5 Diffs. with 28 spline axles. It may go right in but double check clearances.

it would be an easy swap.
1. pull off the rear cover
2. remove center pin
3. remove bearing caps(keep these on the same side they came off)
4. remove brake calipers
5. have a friends push in on the axle whiel you fish out he c-clip then slide the axle about halfway out
6. remove the carrier(this may require the use of a pry bar, but don't worry. make sure you keep the shims on the same sides
7. remove the ring gear(remeber the gear botls are reverse thread) and put it onto the new carrier(torque to 100-125ft/lbs)
8. put the carrier with the shims back into the case(if you get it started going in you can "pull" it hte rest of the way in by bolting and starting to tighten the bearing caps)
9. fully tighten the bearign caps(about 100ft/lbs)
10. push the axle back into the case and reinstall the c-clips
11. put the center pin in( the torson pin looks kinda weird)
12. reinstall the cover
13. refill with fluid(about 2 quarts)
14. reinstall calipers
15. drive gently for a few miles and listen for any rattles or weird noises
16. romp it from a stop light to make sure it leaves a nice pair of lines

this took about 1.5 hours when we did the swap on my friends S-10

hope this helps

Make sure you have 28 spline axles and 3.23 or numericaly higher gears.

The one you have in your car (if it's stock) is the same one that SLP is selling for $99.

They took them out and replaced them with the heavy duty ones for the more agressive driver's who will be driving the SS.

In other words, yes it would be a good investment as a replacement.

do you have to change anything to swap it into a non posi rear? sounds much cheaper than buying and installing a new rear. and do the 28 spline axl's only come in "hi perf" models stock? i have an 86 ta with 3.23's (?) and non posi thanks.

If you have an 86, you have (if stock) 26 spline axles. you'll need 28 spline axles for the slp torsen.

oops...clicked submit too soon.

I'm in the middle of the same swap on my 89. I guess I'll find out if I have 26 or 28 spline axles on mine. I know the 88's still had 26 spline, and the 90's have 28. 89 was the changover year, but I haven't found out if its 26 or 28. I've read about it both ways in different places, so I guess I'll find out soon enough

Just to clarify a bit. The differential in the 91 is an OEM spec Auburn unit, not a Torsen OEM unit. In the years around the 96 SS, SLP/GM offered a Torsen HD Upgrade. A couple of years later, about the time of the LS1 introduction, TOrsen was supplying the OEM differentials to GM for the F-body axles, and SLP/GM was offering the Auburn Pro-series diff as the upgrade.

The Torsen OEM diff (same as the Torsen SLP take off units) is suppossed to be about 15% stronger than the old OEM AUburn GM units.

I have the Torsen/Zexel HD diff in my 92Z/383, and I have put the oem Torsen in my wife's 96 T/A w/SLP RamAir.

I have pics of the two Torsens side by side on the workbench, and they are visably different/identifyable. I can take a pic of the oem Auburns that I have under the bench.

So to re-state, as long as you have the 28 spline axle shafts, they will fit in the Torsen. Also double check backlash in lieu of just bolting old ring gear on Torsen and slapping it in with the same shimming that the old unit was set up with. You may find slight differences in the setup of different units.

To those of you local guys, did you have SLP install it? Woudl you trust them? I dont think I wanna get into a mess like that, and I am curious what it's cost. Does anyone know what the gear ratio is/would be in my car, its the 91 in my sig. Just so I could know if this would be a problem free deal.

I know there is no such thing as problem free tohugh.

ok so if i can get axl's out of a boneyard from a 90 and up camaro they should be 28 spline and will slide right in correct? were they the same on the one leggers? there's tons of them around, and there's a lot of posi's with out the posi unit's . all this should swap straight into my 86 TA rear correct? sounds cool

It will fit any year rear from 82-01 with 3 series gears that is. The only difference with using it in an early year is that you will have to pick up some 28 spline axles. You can install it the way NJSpeeder stated, but it is not advisable. Take basklash measurements on the existing gears and match the numbers when you put the zexel in. Its an awsome posi for $100. It does shudder a little around corners with moderate acceleration at low speeds, but nothing to make a stink about. Buy it, you won't regret it.
