Automatic to manual - questions when looking for the new trans

I have an 84 TA with the 305 and 700r4. It has 120k on it.
I'd like to swap to a manual. The automatic is fast but I'd like to shift gears.
I've never done a transmission swap and am really studying the info here. What I did not see, is what to look for when searching for a manual trans to swap?

I've seen numerous rebuilt and new trans going for almost $2,000 online and also some sitting in salvage yards. Obviously I want the most bang for my buck. Can anyone reccommend somewhere online or what to look for if I'm searching for a donor car? And is it easy to sell the old 700r4 as is? Thanks!

Not being a dick here , but really , that car needs bodywork , desperately , long before it needs any transmission swap !

The rust/rot on that car as it sits now is the car's #1 threat to living much more than a few more years and a $2000 transmission swap should be one of the LAST things you do , after all the rust/rot and paint is taken care of .

PS , a stock used 700R4 is worth about what any rebuildable transmission core is worth , maybe $75 or $100 at best ......
