Change the fluid regularly... yours should use ATF. That, and replace the clutch when it screws up, is about it. There's not much else to do.

That would be correct. The earlier units with brass synchros used gear lube; the 87-up ones with compostion synchros (same material as the clutches in an auto trans actually) use ATF.

One more question. Is it safe to use on manual tranny?

Yea it's safe. That's what the previous post is telling you. And don't use gear oil in a transmission that was designed for ATF.

My 1987 doesn't have a dip stick for the ATF so I have always thought that it used the older style gear. Is this correct, or is mine somehow a little different (it is the standard 5-speed tranny matched up to the LG4-304)?

No manual trans in a car has a dipstick, that I know of. A 87 car, LG4 or whatever, should have the newer style trans that uses ATF, dipstick or no. To check the level, take out the plug that's about 2/3 of the way up on the pass side of the trans, and stick our finger in there, and see where the fluid level is. Or just add fluid until it runs out, that's about as good a check as any... you know it's full when you get done.

It takes about 2½ quarts to fill one of these.

My Camaro is an A4, but on all the T5s and other manuals I've seen, there's two plugs. One's at the bottom for draining it completely. The one further up is the "fill line".

Just did this not too long ago, you'll need about 4 qts ATF if you use the method mentioned in the earlier posts.
