Zf 6 speed swap how to?
My brother has a 3000 mile 90 ZF 6 speed he got in 91 from a wrecked Vette. How hard is that to swap into a 87 Iroc with a 700r4? All we have is the trans. I know they aren't strong but it wont be raced

You will need either an aliminium bellhousing which is rare most are magnesium. Or a custom bellhousing with relocated slave.. the alu us required to weld a t5 slave mount on. The zf uses a pull type clutch from the factory. Its also very bulky. Sell it and get a t56

Re: Zf 6 speed swap how to?
They are stronger than the T56. As far as getting the trans to swap in, unless you ar very good with fabrication, you'll be hunting for the correct parts for quite awhile.
Special crossmember, adapters for the tq arm, trans mount and then there is the bellhousing. A vet part doesn't fit and you'll need to figure out the throwout bearing and clutch fork.
If he has any interest in selling that trans, let me know.

Re: Zf 6 speed swap how to?
I remembered the t-56 conversion was much easier and cheaper. He prob won't sell it but he would let me use it. He has a million cars including a 90 Vette so he'd save it for that. I'll ask.

They are not necessarily stronger. The black tags are but parts are expensive and a t56 can easily be built a lot stronger. The s6 40 does shift like butter though. If it werent so bulky I would have do e it
Oh and it has no tailshaft mount. Just a c beam nounting pad. You'd have to fab a mount and tq arm nount.

Re: Zf 6 speed swap how to?
If you absolutely wanted the 2.66 /0.50 ratios and had everything lined up in front of you to swap either one in, including a QuickTime scatter shield, and the 450lb-ft rating was good either way, . . .
The S6-40 still rattles without a dual-mass flywheel.
Yay, free transmission.
Nay, lots of things to make it work, the shifter location to work.
PS, it doesn't have to have a pull clutch if you use a hydro throw out brg. that fits.

Re: Zf 6 speed swap how to?
Try to find a hydro throwpur. If you do let me know. It would eliminate the eattles also because you delete the springless hub in the pull type
I know quicktime has a bell for the zf.

The throw out bearing sleeve on the ZF S6-40 and LT1 T56 is the same o.d.
The Dia. is smaller than on the T5. McLeod made a hydr. TO brg in the past. but it was too tall.
Guys have deleted the sprung hub flywheel in the past; I don't believe the sprung hub disc. addresses the rattles.
