HELP! Axle question (30 5/16 vs 30 3/8) Disc vs Drum, etc.

Hello!

So I apparently have a Posi with a 28 spline carrier and my car of course has 26 spline axles.

The shop offered to get me a 26 spline Posi at cost, but that'll still be ~$600cdn (exchange rate is brutal) and I'll be left with a 28-spline Posi I can't use.

Other option is to replace my axles with 28 spline axles, allowing me to use the 28 spline Posi I have now.

I would think Axles would be cheaper than the Posi? (I also have a $75GC for Lordco)

They only carry Yukon axles, which on their website all I can find is:

YA G26034018 [21279]

Yukon 1541H alloy rear axle for '90-'92 GM 7.625" Camaro with disc brakes

Yukon Gear and Axle offers an extensive line of general replacement and high performance axles for passenger car, truck and SUV applications. High quality alloys and the latest in heat-treating technologies provide a strong axle for off-road, on the street or at the track.
  • Fits 1990-1992 Camaro with disc brakes
  • 28 spline
  • 30 3/8" long
I see in the FAQ that our axles are listed as 30 5/16" long, is that 1/16" difference going to cause issues?

Also it says for disc brakes cars, which my car has rear drums.. wasn't planning to upgrade to discs, are these axles going to work with drum brakes too? The FAQ said they are interchangable...

I am going to get them priced out tomorrow just hoping to get some advice from you guys before I go and spend a bunch of money I didn't think I was going to!

And just to get it out there, it makes sense to get 28-spline axles to fit my Posi than to get a 26 spline Posi to fit my axles, that would be getting a shittier posi to run stock axles instead of using a better posi with new aftermarket axles??

Axles are the way to go. Easier to get carriers to fit plus a slight upgrade

Can you get new 28 spline side gears for the posi? Whoops - I read too fast. Yes, get the axles.

Is there anything else that needs to be changed when the axles are changed? Diameter etc is the same? Should fit right up with the drum brakes?

Be a good time for new axle bearings but I don't believe they're required

Only an idiot - someone EVEN STOOOOPIDER than me, if you can imagine anyone THAT STOOOOOPID even making it to adulthood - would put new axles (inner bearing races) into old bearings. Replace the bearings and seals.

The difference between 30-5/16" and 30-3/8" is 1/16". In decimal, .0625". To put that into perspective, a business card is about .016" thick... the difference in length is therefore about 4 business cards. There's more slop in the C-clips than that.

"Measure with micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with axe"

Or conversely, measure with walker wheel, mark with Sharpie, cut with laser.

There definitely IS such a thing as "good enough".

No it's not possible to put 28-spline side gears into a 26-spline carrier. Well, that's not quite true... you CAN "put them in" (assuming you get the right gears for whatever carrier you have, since they're not "generic" or "universal")... problem is, the 28-spline axle is bigger than the hole in the side of the 26-spline carrier that it has to go through, to get to the 28-spline side gear. So you can put the gears in, you just can't install axles that mate to them.

Oh and I forgot to mention, the disc/drum thing:

A disc brake rotor has / may have a smaller ID where it fits over the axle flange, than a typical drum brake axle flange. (always / usually / sometimes / occasionally... ??? ... not sure how "absolute" this situation is, even just within our own specific models of rear ends) Therefore you can put a disc brake axle into either drum or disc brakes, but you can't put a rotor onto a drum axle, at least not universally reliably.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...t/model/camaro

These are what I used when I did my 26 to 28 spline conversion. Unfortunately I did not realize the stock 84 rotor would not fit over them so I had to have them turned down a little I think about 0.3" IIRC

Seeing how your car has drums you should not have that issue. They came with nice new Koyo Bearings and new seals and studs.

As for the bearings after I took everything out of the housing I just use some long **** pipe (1/2" black iron IIRC) and knocked them out from the inside instead of using a slide hammer. Took about 2 minutes much easier

Re: HELP! Axle question (30 5/16 vs 30 3/8) Disc vs Drum, etc.

Being in Canada SUCKS! For this, anyway.

So I have another place looking but so far the axles have to come from the states, with shipping/border fees plus 7-10 day wait... and they're $432cdn for the pair plus shipping

And the shop I have doing the work doesn't want to be responsible (obviously) in case they don't work so I really am trusting these boards and what I've found on the internet... if they're wrong it'll be a decently big $$$ restocking fee because they don't want them back...

GAH what a PITA.

Thanks for the link midias, that total cost is $267usd shipped ($366cdn) plus border fees, so probably $460cdn.. an option for sure...

The link I posted is cheaper and comes with studs, bearings and seals. Although USA standard is decent they are made by yukon.

Didn't know if shipping would be different for him on either site. I've shipped to Canada. I know Canadian shipping can be quirky lol

That RockAuto is definitely the best deal, I can get them for $389CAD shipped, and I don't think I ever pay brokerage or border fees with Rockauto parts...

Still waiting for a response from the local driveline shop, if they come up empty I guess I'll order from RockAuto, they say it'll be here next Friday if I order today.
