700r4 annoying problems

Hello guys
I've got an early 87 700r4 in the car.
It shifts good with no signs of slippage (tried at 120mph in 4th gear wide open).
TV cable is set perfect
My problems are:
binding 2-3 when the car is cold (it happens only on the first 2-3 shift)
it hunts when I am at like 50-60 mph and I put in neutral....and it hunts when I release the gas pedal in 2-3-4th gear at 2000 rpm or below
The strange thing is that in OD I HAVE THE OVERRUN APPLIED!!!
If I let the pedal off in 4th gear I feel the engine braking
The tcc is disabled
Fluid is clean and no symptoms of burnt things
I drove the car uphill like I stole it with lots of manual downshifts and It worked good
What could be the cause of my annoying things? Servo or governor?

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

Seems to me the problem is you're expecting it to behave in ways it wasn't designed to, rather than you learning it's ways and adapting yourself to it. Maybe you got spoiled with an electronic controlled auto in a newer vehicle, maybe your first auto was in a Mustang or an import. Whatever the case, if the 700 isn't to your liking, you may need to adapt a 4L60E or 4L80E so you can program it to behave exactly how you wish. The 700's hydraulic controls don't offer that flexibility. It's an economy transmission that can be a little sporty, and it does very well at that. But it is not a performance trans, there are better choices.

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

When you say "hunt", do you mean the torque converter locking and unlocking? The overruns are not applied in overdrive. The 2-4 band is engaged with the 3-4 clutches and the forward clutch pack is on, that is why there is engine braking when in 4th gear. The 2-3 binding shift only happening once is nothing to be concerned with as when the transmission sits overnight, clutch packs, servos and accumulators can possibly drain and cause an odd feeling shift on the first shift of the day.

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

Thank you for your fast replies!
When I say "hunt" I mean:
I am at about 50 mph and 2000 rpm
I let off the gas
It goes way fast to 1000 rpm then suddenly goes up to 1800 (while the engine braking is on) and than it repeats like it wants to downshift
The strange thing is that this thing happens in neutral too
RPMs drop and return up
I nioticed that when it does that I have engine braking and when it hunts the engine braking goes away for a second and then I have it again
When the trans is cold it doesen't do that
The casting says it is an 87 trans with pressure taps and no rainbow on the case
When I bought the car the fluid was black but it did not smell of burnt. It smelled of oxidation
Now it is red (changed 2 times)
The trans has about 120k miles

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

One annoying issue I'm having with my car (89 5.7 TPI/700R4), I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to upshift at 3,000 RPM (ish) at WOT. If I force it to hold first or second it'll run all the way out, but if I leave it in D or OD it always shifts early.

Mind you my car's engine has been modified from stock and is making more horsepower. How much more, I'm uncertain. A previous owner did the work.

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

Yes you can for sure but I live in Italy and I don't speak english very well
Anyway, the problem is still there
I feel the engine braking in OD (4th gear) but I know that in OD is not supposed to have that kind of engine braking
The engine braking "hunt is still there" (no converter clutch).
I hope it is a valve body related issue
I went 120 mph in 4th gear wide open with no signs of slippage at all

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

With the stock torque converter, you will have engine braking in 4th gear (overdrive). The lower the rear end gears (higher numerically), the more engine braking you will feel. The hunting you are describing here is the engine, not the transmission causing this. It sounds pretty much normal otherwise.

Re: 700r4 annoying problems

Checked the engine today for vacuum leaks - TPS - IAC
Everything is brand new
Could sludge in the VB be able to show this problem?
I've noticed some king of hesitation when the car shifts in 4th gear at low speed (letting off the gas in order to upshift)
When in Hot idle the reverse engagement is a bit delayed (one second)
When I let off in roder to shift to 3rd it clunks (brand new U-joints)
Time for a Shift kit?
I forgot to say that when I bought the car, in 2006, the fluid was dark borown with oxidation smell
The tv cable was loose so I set it to spec and this annoying thing happened
Anyway, thank you a lot Probuilt automatics!
PS: I've tore down the Valve body assembly, separator plate 1-2 and 3-4 accumulator and I think I found some problems:
1) The separator plate was worn and warped due to the checkballs
2) The VB gaskets were dry and probably prone to leak
3) The 1-2 accumulator was stuck and the hole was worn
4) The 3-4 accumulator was probably stuck
5) The VB was full of sludge
Bought a 2-3 reprogramming kit from Trans go and an hardened separator plate plus 2 accumulators
