Hurst dual gate in Firebird

Has anybody successfully installed a Hurst Dual Gate in a Firebird (I have a '91)? I know the plate doesn't line up with the console, just curious if someone has modified it to make it work.

Re: Hurst dual gate in Firebird

Depends on what you mean by "success".

If you mean, did they get it to go in, that's one thing. (can't help you with that) If you mean, did it work right, and were they satisfied, that's something else altogether.

It's just a notoriously crappy design. It's had the same problems since they called it the "his & hers" back in the 60s. I have personally known multiple people who blew up their motors from it going a gear or 2 too far in the heat of the moment and ending up in neutral at the track. Just altogether a piece of excrement to be avoided at all costs.

Re: Hurst dual gate in Firebird

I have one in my 84 TA. The shifter itself works fine, but I never did come up with a solution for the plate yet. It was designed for Camaros. Back then, I bought a sheet of textured ABS plastic to make a new cover, deleting the ashtray, and was going to glue the Hurst plate over the ABS. If I could only find somewhere to CNC cut the ABS sheet.

Mine is an 84 (different console than yours). But the shifter itself just bolts in.
I never did finish getting the plate done.
