Replacing Non C-Clip Axle Shafts (Help!)
Replacing Non C-Clip Axle Shafts (Help!)
Hi everyone. First time posting. I'm stuck in the middle of a job and I could really use some guidance.
I have an '89 9-Bolt Borg-Warner posi rear in the back of a 91 I've been rebuilding and I'm trying to get the rear axles and bearings replaced, BUT they're not the c-clip style.
They're the press-fit retainer>bearing>seal style.
So, three questions:
1) Do I even need to replace the original axles? Can I just press on new bearings and the axle as-is will be fine?
2) If I SHOULD get new axles, what am I getting? I desperately need suggestions.
3) Do c-clip axles work in a non c-clip application?
Thank you in advance for any help you guys can give. I've been lurking thirdgen for five years and this is the first time I've ever run up short in terms of "search first".

Axles like yours almost never need to be replaced due to wear. If they are bent then they will need to be replaced, but otherwise they should be fine. Just replace the bearings and seals.
C clip axles do not fit in a non c clip rear end.

Make sure you have the replacement parts IN YOUR HAND, verified to be the correct ones, especially the seals, BEFORE you take it apart.

Oh, I'm waaaaaay past the point of no return on that bit of wisdom. Rolling into day 2 from an extremely frustrated day 1.
This whole thing went sideways on me pretty fast. But I'll have all the correct parts in hand today and be back on the road by tomorrow *knock on wood*.
Two separate wheel seals (National 224255 & 710179), two SET-9 bearings and one extremely confused local parts store guy who is wondering what genius designed an asymmetrical rear-end.

Glad you got the seals, various people have been reporting that one of them is now being stamped from virgin unobtanium alloyed with about 1% irreplacium.
Bearings aren't usually as much of an issue.

Well let's see... I called:
Autozone: "We can get them by May... No, June."
Advance: "Uhhhhhhhh....."
Napa: "We can get one, but to get the passenger side we'll have to call a hero and he'll have to slay a dragon..."
PepBoys: "Did you call Napa? Oh, yeah, dragons are tough, man."
And finally,
Church's: "Yeah, we can get that. You'll just wait to wait until tomorrow."
Which was still completely baffling. I actually told my Aussie friend about the whole situation with these parts and blamed him for all this misfortune.

In what city is Church's located? It helps to know the good ones.
