what year 700R4?

I just bought this tranny from someone and it's a bit different than my 89 700R4.There are 2 spots for the t/c cover to mount, mine has 4.This is like the third thing that just don't add up w/ this shop.Did they give me a weak 84 700R4,a 200R4 or what?Where are the id tags (year, etc)on a 700R4?

Do you know where your second gear shift servo is? You need to look at the cover for the servo. It should have the last two digits of the year it was produced right in the center. This is the round thing on the outside of your tranny on the same side of your shifter select (i think). Anyway try to read the year. You should be okay with that unless some idiot changed the cover, but that rarely happens. This is the servo that applies the band.
Get back to me and let me know.

The year is found on the passenger side of the trans just above the pan rail before the pan makes a 90 dgree turn. The first digit denotes the year, "9" a 1989, "2" a 1992, etc. If you have the case that looks like some one sawed the ears off to clear the headers, then it is a genuine GM modification. I am not sure when this is done, but I suspect it is a 1988 & up 4WD case (this case can be used anywhere) from what I have seen. I would ask transfixleo on this one if you need to know.

I could be wrong on this but I believe that the "sawed off" cases were for the 4.3 liter. This does not mean that it is a bad or weak tranny as the internals are the same. I worry more about what was or wasn't done to it and what was changed inside it. All bets are off then.

If it's a 4wd case then why would this shop use it?Is there any ways to confirm a rebuild tranny ,anything to look for?

Get a felt pen and count the number of splines on the input shaft (marking the counted one with the pen).

If you have 27, then it's the old 700R-4
If you have 30 then you have a newer 700R-4

The 200 dosn't look like a 700r4 at all. I have a 700 out of a 4.3 asto and the case looks just like the one in my GTA. The front pump should have the #s 732 on it. Your GTA will have a better servo and valve body in it if it's the original tranny. The servo isn't quite as large as the vette, but will work fine. Hope you didn't leave them your GTA tranny.
