I was looking at some videos the other day of what some guys do to remove the 3rd accumulator check ball on a 700R4. Scary stuff. I know many of us avoid servicing this check ball since it seems like a bear to remove. The last time I went after my 2-3 shift bind, which still isn't perfectly resolved, I replaced the check ball. Rather than risk damaging the case using a screw extractor, a lag bolt, or some other backyard device, I decided to make an actual tool that removes the check ball capsule clean and quick. Like most great ideas, I stole this one from someone else. Successfully making this tool, which works awesome BTW, out of a bolt from the hardware store, that I'll happily take credit for. Sorry if the photos aren't real clear, crappy phone. I can take more photos but the basic idea is I matched the tool to a new check ball capsule so it fits nicely inside. Insert the tool, turn til it stops, a few wacks with a slide hammer and the valve is out. Then I used this pin punch from Snap On to install the new one. Super smooth again. The bolt is a 5/16" x 6" grade 8.
