4L70E converter in 700r4?

Just like the title says, can i use a 4L70E converter in a 700r4? buddy of mine has one he's willing to give up, which has a 2k stall on it. All my searching on the net has led me to believe that if my replaced 700r4 is a 27 spline, then it can take that converter......although somewhere else said that the 4L70E is 32 spline.

Re: 4L70E converter in 700r4?

The 27 spline input shaft was only on 1982 and midway in 1984. 30 spline was on everything then on. The torque converter will work if it came off a LT type of transmission. If the torque converter came off an LS style, then no it will not work. LS transmissions have a bolt hole at the top of the bell housing, LT style transmission does not. If you are not sure if yours is a 27 spline or 30 spline, then the easy way is to measure the OD of the input shaft. The 27 spline is .apx. 890" in diameter, and the 30 spline is apx. .990" in diameter. Much easier than counting the splines.
