I'm having a very frustrating time re aligning my gear shifter with the gears inside the transmission. I replaced the gear shift cable because the gears didn't line up right on the gear shift. When the car was in park, if you looked at the gear shift, the lever was in front of the P. Reverse, Neutral, Drive, etc... all had the same issues. When I looked at the cable end attached to the transmission, it was all jacked up. So I replaced the cable and the gasket on the Transmission pan as well because it was leaking. Now I when I put everything back together, the new cable fits easily between the mounting brackets, but the inner cable is so tight beyond the brackets that its not releasing the steering column so I can start the car and the shifter still doesn't line up. I contacted the cable manufacturer and they said the cable is not adjustable and is direct replacement for the OEM cable. The only thing I have left to go on is that maybe the cable bracket attached to the transmission pan is not in the right location. I know that's where it goes, but maybe it's on the wrong bolts? I can't find a diagram or a picture anywhere that shows which bolts this attaches to. I'm fairly confident that I put the bracket back in the same spot it was in prior to the change, but being that the alignment was already off, I guess it's possible the last guy put it in the wrong place? Or maybe there's some technique that I'm missing? I don't know, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! 1984 Camaro Z28 5.0 HO TH700R4 Transmission
This is my gear shift. Right now it looks aligned, but that's because the cable is unattached on the transmission end.
This picture just shows where the bracket is currently mounted.
