Play in the front wheels

Hello,
I have some game in the front wheels.
That comes from the bearings apparently but I wanted to know if this game is normal and functional or not ?
If it is not normal is this conical bearings that can be tightened?
thank you in advance for your help
Sincerely
Mike

Hi Mike , You must lift each wheel off of the ground with a jack under the subframe , and then grab the wheel and wiggle it side to side and up and down to see where the play is . If the play is the actual wheel bearings themselves , no you can not simply tighten them up , the rotors have to come off and the bearings need to be inspected to find out why they got loose in the first place (usually excessive wear) , and then either replaced with new or if still usable cleaned and repacked with new grease .

I find that most don't know how to work with the bearings on these cars, they either put them on way too tight or way too loose. They are also suppose to be inspected on each tire rotation.

The proper procedure for new bearings is to pack the new bearings and install the rotor and bearings, torquing the hub nut to about 12 ft lbs with a torque wrench, then spin the rotor by hand forward and backward a few rotations (this seats the bearings) then back the nut off, then snug it hand tight only and insert the cotter pin. If using used bearings most people just do hand tight, but make sure you are spinning the rotor so hand tight is actually hand tight, then back it off until the cotter pin lines up. Bearings are cheap but putting new races in is a pain, if going through the process and history is un known go ahead and replace them and the inner seal.

Re: Play in the front wheels

Hello,
So I controlled well by lifting the front wheels and the game comes well bearing.
I think they are original so 91 with 172000 kms to their credit.
I will dismount them and see if they are really HS.
In this case I would change them following the procedure indicated by aviator857.
Thank you for this info ...
I will keep you informed of the rest.
I will still enjoy the sun as the game is minor for now and would do the work in 1 month.

Thanks
Mike
