700R4 ability to handle torque and hp
So along my journey of upgrading my 1988 305 Camaro sport coupe I was wondering at what point does the 700r4 need upgraded or replaced when considering an estimated RWHP of 300

It all depends on what you're doing with the car. If you're planning on big slicks with high RPM launches its probably not gonna last too long. If your're doing street driving I'm sure it'll be fine for a good while. Also, what kills drive train parts is torque not hp.

I destroyed 5 700r4 transmissions that were built with all the strongest parts of the mid 2000's with a FBO 305 with 3.73' in the back. If you want to put any kind of power to the car in the future throw a th350/400 in there. The 700r4 doesn't even belong in a go kart in my opinion

Re: 700R4 ability to handle torque and hp
The 700r4 had shortcomings from the factory. As years went on they figured stuff out and made improvements. A rebuilt 700r4 with updated parts and good clutches will last for a VERY long time. 400hp is no problem when built correctly. If something is not done right or setup right they won't last long. I have done several without issues, including the one that's in my buddies '72 Chevelle with a pretty stout 406 smallblock. Hell, I built a TH200c for a friend that lives behind a 350 Olds with ported heads and a huge cam. It was the stock trans behind the old 307. The biggest thing is finding somebody that knows how to do it right.
