Finally found a v6 T5 and I'm getting ready for my auto to manual swap, but not really sure what shape it's in. Heres a few pics. If it's bad I'm gonna be learning how to rebuild the T5! Looks easy but if it's not broken why fix. Do I have to tear it down to be sure?

Doesn't look too bad. What I see, I'd run. Particularly, reverse isn't all ate up from a driver that didn't know to put it in a forward gear before reverse, crashing and grinding it every time, and filling the fluid with metal chips.
I'd recommend leaving it alone and running it. Devote your attention to the clutch. Make sure EVERY DETAIL about that is right. The vast majority of "transmission problems" are REALLY clutch problems. And a bad clutch, that doesn't release properly, will tear up all the shifting parts of a transmission.

Cool thanks for the tip Sofa, gonna run it as it sits. V6 t5 owners what clutch would you recommend?
I agree, looks to be in good shape. Sure looks like a world class version too. Good score! Your putting it behind a v6?
Theres some good info it this page that you might find useful? https://lugnutz65chevystepside.weebl...info-page.html

Thanks bro! Yeah behind my ancient 3.1 that refuses to quit. Soon 3.4 if 3.1 dies. Picked it off a 92 so surely a WC. Thanks for the link!
Your car is a 3.1 ??? Do you KNOW what year the donor T5 came from; and did you intend to use the flywheel from that same car ??
FYI: there are 2 V6 manual flywheels found in Thirdgens. I found out the hard way when I installed a 91 3.1 engine into an 87 2.8 (with T5) and I used the wrong flywheel. I'm not sure what year the change was off the top of my head - just be sure to check into it before you mount a flywheel to your engine !!
I've never installed a junkyard - or unproven - stick tranny without first giving it to a tranny shop for inspection. The last time this happened was when I converted a buddies 91Z from auto to stick last fall. While I can open them up and look for anything obvious, I'm not a "tranny guy" and don't know exactly what to look out for. The shop charge was $100 to crack it open, inspect and re-seal. Some things are worth paying for and with my limited knowledge of T5's - $100 was a small piece to pay for the 'piece of mind' of knowing that I wasn't going to have to pull it all back out again after it was fully installed.

John,
Now I want to know details on the V6 third gen flywheels. Was it a balance change? Did the late one continue to '02?
I mainly know the V8 stuff...
Yup,... It was a balance change. That was 13 years ago so I'm not exactly sure about the details but I just scrolled thru some old posts and found this:
