Install and resizing solid Teflon seals without special tools

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has successfully installed and resized solid teflon seals without the special tools. I hear some people use a funnel and electric tape wrap. These days you don’t know how good tools are until you try them and I don’t want to spend 150 bucks for a tool kit that works mediocre.

I took the side of a 2L soda bottle and cut a piece of that. I then slid the rings over and used a piece of soda bottle with hose clamps to "resize" them.

The tool works as advertised but it's not necessary. Since I already have the installation tool, so I went with solid rings.

Alternatively, you can use the scarf cut sealing rings. I'm assuming use of scarf cut rings is acceptable - ProBuilt Automatics provided scarf cut rings in my kit.
