It wants the opening to face away from the shell. I just rebuilt a Dodge 42re for my truck, you can typically lay the torrington onto the parts it mates against and figure out if it's going to spin freely that way or not. Hope that helps.
You lay the outer race (flat piece that fits fairly tightly to the shaft-like thing it sits on) on the shell, then lay the cage (slightly narrower piece with large inner dia with the rollers in it) on top of and inside of that.
