88 Camaro with VSS Speedometer Gears and cable driven speedo? I'm so confused.
Trying to restore my old man's 88 IROC.
I know a lot of the history of this car, but there's some definite weirdness going on. I know right after the warranty expired, the ring and pinion went out. It was replaced with 3.23 gears. Obviously putting the speedo and odo way off.
From my readings on here, 86+ Firebirds and 90+ Camaros got the VSS speedometer gears, but my 88 has them even though it has a cable driven speedometer. I'm confused. The top one is the one I bought, the bottom is what was in it.
I physically can't get to it, so I took it to a shop to replace whatever gears were in it with 15/38 gears - but they couldn't put that 38 tooth driven gear in because it was different. I'm attaching the picture my buddy at the shop sent me.
Should I be able to put a non VSS housing on and use the all plastic gear type? Has anyone seen this before?
I just want to get it right. The largest obstacle I see is that you cannot get a 38 tooth driven VSS gear. They are only being made in 37 and 44 tooth variants.
