Did you also swap the speedometer drive gear from your original transmission into the transmission out of the Caprice?

Speedo gear is in the wrong location. There are two holes in the shaft for the drive gear retaining clip, use the other one.

+1 Could be !

For everything EXCEPT for a Vette,... It's the hole closest to the CASE. ( all the way UP the shaft )

Could also be the wrong VSS, wrong gear, or combination of the 2. VSS ( cable AND electric ) are made for only a range of driven speedo gears. ( not ALL tooth counts will fit.) This range of tooth counts is usually found somewhere on the VSS itself.

Cable and Electric Driven gears are not the same. If you use an electric speedo gear on a cable VSS than expect problems. Be sure that you are using a Driven gear made for a cable application and that the Driven gear is within the range of acceptable tooth counts for the VSS.

Yep, I had this happen to me once. It will still work with the gear in the wrong location but the mesh is very slight. Mine lasted a couple hundred miles before it wore enough to no longer work.

Re: Keep tearing up speedo gears

I had a 700r4 driven gear crack while cruising. That let it work itself out of position. Suddenly my speedometer stopped working.
