9 bolt

Hey guys I am new here. Modding my 86 Berlinetta I pulled out from the mud. Was recently at a yard and found a smashed 89 IROC with the rear intact. Its a Borg Warner 9 inch with disk brakes. Started to take it apart and order parts for the rebuild. The gears are still good however, the cones are both bottomed out. Does this mean I need a new carrier or just the cones? I had planned to grind the carrier ridge down when I installed the new cones from 9bolt.com and was wondering why Id need a new carrier as some of the articles I've read have stated. Any help or info about the 9 bolt would also be helpful as I'm very familiar with the 10 bolt but not the 9.

Re: 9 bolt

My suggestion would be not to waste your time rebuilding cones. Get a Torque Lock helical (torsen) limited slip differential like many on this forum have already done. The only modification needed on some cars is a little grinding of the pinon gear for clearance.

They can be ordered from 9 Bolt (I believe) or on ebay from Australia.

Keep all the strength of the 9 bolt with a nearly indestructible LSD.

Re: 9 bolt

Sounds good! Question though, will my original 2.77 gears work or will i need a higher ratio? Read something about a series 2 vs series 3 ring and pinion.

Yes. That should work. You probably will need to grind the top of the pinion for clearance. It is really easy to do and I did not even pull mine from the car. I found using a 4 inch flap disk on an angle grinder worked best.

I think there is a gear split like most other rearends but to be safe check 9bolt.com or the 9 bolt FAQ here

Re: 9 bolt

The series break in the 9-bolt is between 3.08 and 3.27.

You can't use a 3 series carrier with 2 series gears because the flange on it that the ring gear mounts to, is too close to the pinion. That's what carrier "series" is all about. You can use a 3 series gearset on a 2 series carrier, if you either put a spacer behind the ring gear (not all rears accommodate this gracefully) or use extra-thick "special" gears. To my knowledge neither of those things is available for the 9-bolt. I have no clue whether you can buy a 2 series Torsen carrier.

That 89 9-bolt is GOLD. People will give you their left reproductive organ for those brakes. If you can't use it because it has a crappy ratio, you can almost certainly make money on parting it out.

Re: 9 bolt

Then I have to assume, people are only after the Backing-Plates...
Since all of the other brake components are still available (reman./ aftermarket).

I have been cutting my own "flat-plate" steel backing-plates for the PBR Brakes for the last 10 years now.
Unless someone is restoring a 3rd gen to as close to completely stock as possible...
I see no point in hunting-down the original Backing-Plates (and paying crazy prices for them).
