ring and pinion help needed

Ok so I have a 91 firebird with a 10 bolt and drum brakes that isnt posi. I got a free borg warner 9 bolt out of an 87 trans am with 2.77 gears. There is no way in hell im running 2.77s but I was looking for different gears and since its under the 3.08 it says i need a different case to run 3.73s or something like that. Does that mean I need a whole new pimpkin? if so can i even use the parts off of this one like if i get an empty pumpkin and put this posi unit in it? Or basically am i stuck with a piece of junk? Thanks for any help you can shed on this topic that I don't know much about.

No those are for 10 bolt rears that is a 9-bolt. They are completly different and parts don't swap. Unfortunately for you 9-bolt parts are hard to find and really expensive.

Ok I guess I didn;t word that quite right..... forget about the 10 bolt its not there nor is it important. So I have this nine bolt with 2.77s in it and the few sites that actually sell ring and pinion sets for the 9 bolt say that I cant use any gears 3.27 or higher in the 2 series that the 2.77s came in so what im asking is if I get a 3 series 9 bolt case but just the case can I use the posi unit in the 2 series and get a ring and pinion that I want?

Whats a "case"? Is that a housing or a carrier? You cannot use any 3.27 or higher gear on a 2.77 type carrier.

Guys thanks for your help as you can tell I am a little confused.

The housing and axles you can reuse. The carrier and the gears you will need to change.

I think I have it now... the housing and the azles brakes everything on the outside I can use but I would have to get a new carrier which is the posi unit right? I would need a posi unit from a 3 series carrier which would be 3.27 or higher for a 9 bolt right? And I also need a set of ring and pinion gears? Tell me if I am still *** backwards or what? Thanks, Ron.
