Help with transmission gears

I have a 92 camaro and have been looking at swapping the rear gears out for something with a little more punch to make the car more fun. I have a 700r4 trans with a 10 bolt 7.5 in rear end. I have stock 2.73 rear gears in there already and want to go up to 3.42. My problem is with the speedometer being off. You can buy transmission gears to fix the speed on the speedometer but I don’t know which one I need nor how to figure that out. Does anyone have 3.42 rear gears and know what transmission gears I need or can anyone figure this out with me?

I do not believe that the 1992 Cars used a Cable-Driven Speedometer...
I believe that you have an Electric Speedometer (uses a Reluctor and Pick-Up instead of Gears).

so what would I have to do to have a correct speedometer? Could you send a link to what you’re talking about

Re: Help with transmission gears

i'm just finishing up doing the same to my 1990 305 tbi auto , 2.73 open to 3.42 limited slip

for the speedo to read correct with factory parts your going to need the white vss , speed sensor , and 15t driven gear and a 41 tooth drive gear , grey and yellow respectively. the white plastic vss is for gears over 40t , your car probably gas the black plastic vss for gears with less than 40t. the white vss is near impossible to find as it's been discontinued for a while now

you can also use a dakota digital sgi-100bt to correct your speedo , i started a thread a few down from this one about it. unless you get lucky like i did and find someone with a white vss it's probably your best option

Okay, Thank you for clarifying things.

These Model-Years then use the bastardized VSS/ Electric-Speedometer that still has the Plastic-Gears instead of a Reluctor.
Thanks again.

For anyone that has not seen these before...
This is a "in-between-system" that came after Cable-Driven Speedometers, but before the Output-Shafts had a Reluctor that is read by a Magnetic-Pickup.
