6 speed trans for 383 stroker
Hey guys! (And gals?)
Long story short I have my fathers old 1984 anniversary edition trans am and I’m continuing the legacy! I’m 34 and used to working on newer motors so this carb stuff is a whole new world to me… unfortunately I don’t know the specifics of the car and there’s no one I can ask, so I’m slowly learning what’s been done.
I know it’s a 383 stroker with some type of crane cam and some type of edlebrock 4 barrel carburetor… I believe the gears are 3.73 because at 70 in 5th the rpm’s are about 2500. Other than that I am lost… the trans leaves much to be desired and I do plan on supercharging this car so I would like a 6 speed that can handle some power. But I have no idea where to start… especially since it’s a different motor it will be bolting up to… I’m open to all advice! Thank you all so much in advance!

A T56 6-speed from a 94'-97' Camaro/Firebird is a pretty common swap. Stock they are rated for 450 lb-ft or torque. There are a bunch of posts on how to do the conversion.

T56 Magnum (not the -F version.)
If you like your first gear, you can go with the 2.97 first gear version. 6th is 0.63, which is what your 5th is.
If you want less first gear, you can go with the 2.66 first gear version. 6th is also 0.63.
In either case, you can swap 5th and 6th to 0.75 and 0.50 if you want more overdrive.
Any T56 Magnum is a TR6060. The standard T56 Magnum rear shifter position (out of 3) will match up well with the stock T5 location.
The T56 Magnum-F is built like a 98-02 F-body LS1 T56. To bolt it up to your SBC, it will be farther back, and the shifter will have to be further back than the T5 (cutting time) and you still have to get a shorter driveline. So it would have no strength, and no fitment advantage over the regular Magnum for your particular application.
I've always been a fan of the V8 T5 / 3.73 combo for overall gearing and drivability.
