I need help to decode what i think is a 700R4 trans...there is MD8 on the housing and also 5YK307B etched on the housing above the pan. the trans extension housing has 8642547-2 etched on it. thanks for any help in decoding all this info...I am pretty sure it is a 700R4 made in 1985 but that is all I can figure out. the trans is in a 1967 camaro that i got 3 years ago. gm 350 engine and it does have a TV cable.
thanks

Re: 700R4 trans
that is a T700-for best results, the TCC torque converter clutch should be hooked up and operable and the TV cable correctly adjusted. Most of the "bugs"of the earliest 700s were corrected by 1984.

Re: 700R4 trans
thanks very much for your prompt reply...had the trans rebuilt 2 years ago by a local quality shop that specializes in muscle cars...tranny operates just fine and no issues at all with it...the tech had to work a couple hours on the that TV cable bracket (and fabricated a new one) but he finally got it right. we were also happy that it was a 30 spline and not the 27...this is no quarter mile car but a highway cruiser and barely turning 2500RPMs at 70mph...very happy with the ride.

by the way, can you tell me what that 5YK307B translates to ? all i can find is that the 5 is the year the trans was built...cannot find out what the other letters and numbers mean.

thanks again.

Re: 700R4 trans
First digit is the year. 5 = 1985. In mid 1984 they went from 27 spline input shaft to a 30 splines input shaft. A couple of minor improvements by 1985. Late 1987 and later had many more improvements, with the 1993, (last year in the USA) pretty much having everything that started going into 4L60E's.

Wow, I got lucky. I did not know that, and ordered a 27 spline converter for my '84 700R-4 and it fit. Or am I talking about "output" shaft?
This trans is not original to my car...

Re: 700R4 trans
The ONLY portion of that Case Stamping that pertains to the Original Type of Vehicle, is:
-5YK.

=1985 B-Body Station-Wagon with a 305.

The VIN would ONLY tell you if it were a Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, or Chevrolet.

Nope, you got it right - INPUT shaft spline count.
