Trying to finish up my rebuild but stuck on reverse drum. So my drum is in pretty bad shape but reverse always engaged nicely. Trying to reuse my drum, I purchased this kit which includes a wavy steel which is suppose to not eat into the drum. To my surprise this wavy plate(if you can even call it a plate) is so thin almost like sheet metal. I Was expecting a thicker steel to come with the kit to make up this lost clearance but all I got was the "wavy". But thinking about it now the wave is so thin might not even cushion the apply. Heard about the wavy being used in 82-86 700s, tore down 2 at a jy but they had the same bellville plate.. thinking about it now I'd probably be better off with a new drum or thicker reverse frictions? What's the solution here ? Looked up the alto drum saver but nobody sells it.
Can you put a caliper on the Waved Steel, and tell us how thick it is?
Early Units did use a Waved Steel, with a Steel Apply Piston...
Later Units have an Aluminum Apply Piston with a Bellville Steel.
I personally like to use the Late Drum, Late Apply Plate, and the Early Waved Steel.
The Backing Plates are available in Selective thicknesses, for adjusting Clearance.

Measures 0.03 or .030 right? My top plate measures 0.26 How much does the early wavy measure? The kit was suppose to come with a spacer plate, only got the wave.

The Original Waved Steel is more than double that Thickness.
If you want to take a chance...
You can purchase a second Waved Steel (another of what you have)...
Install 2 Waved Steels, directly on top of one another (the peaks and valleys of the Waved Steels MUST line-up with one another).
Talked to the man Dana and he passed along some part numbers for the 82-86 wavy .080 steel and thicker frictions as well. The wavy I purchased from the bay was 30 dollars. 0.080 wave from Transtar, 10 bucks. Well see how it goes.
