Pinion Depth

I have a 1982 Trans AM with a 10 bolt 7.5 inch rear end GU3 axle. I am rebuilding but cannot find an actual number for the pinion depth setting. The repair manual only shows how to use a gm tool that tells you the shim thickness needed but not the actual depth measurement., can anyone help?

Re: Pinion Depth

Always start with the same shim (thickness) that came out of the axle. Without an old shim, 8/10 times the thickness is between 0.029 and 0.034, this should get you started.

When using a depth tool, there is no magic number. There should/can be one scribed into the pinion. It's pinion set specific.

In the end, when using a tool or not, you should always end the installation process by reading the pattern.

Re: Pinion Depth

100% agree with Camaro71.
Are you changing to aftermarket gears?
AFAIK, those are the only ones with a target pinion depth measurement scribed into the pinion gear face.
