9 bolt whine

Got a 9 bolt in my 87 Trans Am. It started whining a bit not long after I bought the car, checked the oil and it seemed pretty damn low.

I've filled it up with the thick Lucas diff oil that's supposed to stop noises, I think its helped a bit but overall i can still hear it constantly driving along.

Ive never pulled apart an axle before and don't really want to so I'm just wondering what the likely part is that's making the noise now. Or is there a rebuild kit that's worth looking at and getting a garage to do it?

Re: 9 bolt whine

Most likely, the pinion bearings.

As far as repairing it, it's not too hard to rebuild a rear end. Biggest problem you'll have with that one is, one of the versions of one of the axle seals (yeah the 2 sides are different for some reason) is VERY hard to find. I'm not sure the details of all that. Other than that it's fairly straightforward. All the other parts are available.
