88 Camaro Shifter assembly replacement

Hello, I am replacing the shifter assembly on my 88 Camaro. The plastic pin in the handle is broken off. I’m not able to find any videos to help with this. My concerns are mainly with the two cables that are attached. Are they under any kind of tension? Or can I just take them off of the old one and reattach to the new one. Are there any kinds of adjustments or settings that need to be done on the replacement or is it plug and play? Thanks for any help with this!

You could always go with a much better aftermarket unit. I had the same issues with my stock shifter and ended up installing a Hurst pistol grip shifter. 1000x better in every way
