Possible transmission issue - drives, then just stops....

I've searched the boards but not sure the issue we're having with our 700r4 is the same as others have posted.

Our 34 chevy was running just fine. I made a stop, shut it off, got back in to leave. Had no issues. Got about 2 miles, then it just stopped moving but the rpms were still there. Pulled off the road, shut it off, started it up and it would drive for a bit then just stopped. Tranny seemed a bit low so I added more fluid. Started it up, made 2 laps around the parking loy just fine. Went to leave, stopped again. So we went home and got the trailer. Started it up, backed it up maybe 6 feet, Started halfway up the ramps, stopped. Shut it off, Started again and got it on the trailer.

No issues before all this. Its strange I can shut it off, and right after starting it up I have full gears, then just nothing after a few minutes. Tried revving to see if it would catch but nothing. Thinking it's the governor, but any other suggestions?

Not the governor-it just won't upshift when that is not working.Any unusual noises from tranny at idle-growling noise of pump sucking air ? could drop pan and check for loose valve body bolts or any tell-tale debris in the pan.

I just started having exact same problem today. Lol. Startup and drive for a few blocks then wont upshift. Come to a stop and every gear is a neutral even reverse (park works though lol). Shut engine off and start back up and trans shifts excellent until u slow down to a crawl then no upshift and then nothing. Restart and good to go. Blah blah blah. Hahahaha
HELP !!!
cheers 🍻

The fluid and filters in these cars are meant to be changed at a regular service interval, some say if the fluid has been in the transmission for a long time leave it, problem with that is conventional fluid breaks down. What you're describing sounds like a plugged filter, shutting off the car lets the sediment drop back down to the bottom of the pan and the trans will work for a couple of minutes before it plugs again, it happened to me. I had a bad rattling noise at idle and when my transmission would shift it would sound like air was being sucked through a tube, slipping out of gear and such. What I did was just buy the duralast filter kit at my local autozone and threw it in, while I was down there I also put in a vette servo I highly recommend it. After that I had a really strong shifting transmission and no more weird problems, band material can clog the filter and cause this hence why I put the vette servo in so the band has more clamping force and less slip when engaging.
