OD doesn't work, but Drive does... now fine......????

In my '85 Z28 305 TPI 700r4 145,000miles... I was coming out of a parking lot. Started to go selector in OD, and suddely I hear almost like a poof... I stop accelerating, and the rpms right. Like I shifted in neutral only I have a puff this time. I took my foot off the gas, tried to accelerat again and I got just RPM rise. Shifted to the drive selection, and started going and I seemed to move alright. Stop light.... put back in over drive.... started going... and I started to go... then the rpms rose but I didn't move. No poof this time. Drove to my destination in Drive. Engine hot and running in park like supposed to, check dip stick... reads empty. Turn car off.... empty. Hour later I check w/ car off.... says full..... I drive back home and it works just fine.

What's the deal? Am I out of tranny fluid? I know I have a small leak but for the past month the dip stick has always read full.

I AM CONFUSED?

Either the Input Sprag is bad and/or the Forwards (likely the teeth) are bad.

The Input Sprag by nature, wears and when it does it can slip on reengagement which takes it's toll on the drive teeth on the Fwds, or it can just let go and not hold at all when the Fwds apply. Either way the tranny must come out to be repaired.

You are obviously low on fluid. It should be to the top mark when it is hot, running and in park.

I don't know enough to take the tranny out myself, nore do I have the time. I know it's 200$ from the shop just to pull the transmission. Do I need a complete rebuild? If I put so much $$ in it having as many miles as it does.... should I just get a new one or rebuild this one?

I guess I should read the whole post! What happens if you fill the tranny?

Got a descent reading I was about a qrt low. Put in a quart yesterday. Today it did the same thing... poof and slippage type deal. Shifted to neutral.. coasted a while.... put back into OD and it works normalish. I think I may still be slipping because if I try, when she shifts from 1st to 2nd off the line I can churp. I can't now. Dip Stick reads full today as well.
