Help me decide on a transmission

For a topic I'd thought would be beat to death on here, I couldn't find much on transmission choices for autox. I know t56 is the popular choice but unless i can find one for a good deal, looks like it won't be the budget. So trying to decide between th350 or th400. I know th400 are strong but take alot of hp to run, and th350 are not as strong and take away less hp. I'm leaning towards a the th350 but would like to see if I can get some feed back first. The motor will be a stock 5.3 with a drop in cam. Most likely a lm7. So gusstimateing around ~360hp. Planing on eventually running sticky tires too. Not sure on gears yet but most likely going off research will be 3.23 or 3.43s? Stock rear end. You guys think a th350 will hold up? Or should I spend it on a th400. Trying to get running with a used one and then eventually have it built for around a $2k budget?

Re: Help me decide on a transmission

Don't be afraid of a T5 manual. It will take some abuse and will be much more fun for autocross. I went from a 700R4 to a T5 and the car is so much more fun now.

Re: Help me decide on a transmission

I always thought the t5 was just as strong as the 700r4 and barely held up to the stock 5.0-5.7 in autocross. I wss looking at getting something that can be built or used as a core to have built and beable to get the drive shaft set up.

Re: Help me decide on a transmission

That was my first choice but after a lot of research came to the conclusion 1st and 2nd gear are to far apart. And even built for $4k there rated for only 400hp. Not really that great for a autox cross trans also overdrive will never really be used efficiently. They don't seem to be as strong as a th350

TH400 or 4l80e. 4L80e is the same transmission just with overdrive

Re: Help me decide on a transmission

Why not just use a TH-200-4R with a multi-fit Chevrolet and a B-O-P bolt pattern bellhousing?

They can be built tough, don't soak up as much power as other automatic transmissions, and have a nice gear ratio split.
.
  • 1st gear: 2.74
  • 2nd gear: 1.57
  • 3rd gear: 1.00
  • 4th gear: 0.67
