Re: T56 swap shifter removal question

Steering columns for auto and manual trans cars are different.

The cable turns the collar that keeps you from taking the key out unless it's in Park.

A manual transmission column has a little lever thing you push down with a finger to release the key.

If you're re-using your auto trans column, not much you can do, except remove the cable, and turn it to where the key can always come out.

Re: T56 swap shifter removal question

Just remember, if you keep the auto column that while you can remove the cable the mechanism that locks the key cylinder is still there and can activate by rotating that section of the column. Just something to keep in the back of your brain. When I manual swapped my car I used the auto column for 20 years. Then I got a manual trans column rebuilt. Over the years i had the section rotate a little and lock the key in, it was really infrequent and as a result, 30 seconds of wtf. I feel like keeping the cable attached and zip tied kept it more stable and moved less.

Re: T56 swap shifter removal question

Indeed:

I recall the question coming up once in awhile, about, I can't get my key out; and usually it has to do with the shifter thing.
