Help Quick, I'm changing the tranny fluid today!!
It's in my GFs '96 Blazer which I'm assuming has the 700R4 as well. I watched my brother change mine once, but I don't remember it all. I just waanted to make sure if there is anything special that I need to look out for or make sure I do. Thanks for the help.
I changed the filter and fluid on my 90 GMC S-15 4x4 Jimmy last fall, so I have some experience with it. This was with a 4.3L , maybe the newer ones' will be easier.
It was a pain for me due to the exhaust crossed over and did not let you drop the pan enough to get it out ( it dropped about an inch and the lip of the pan would catch the pipe). I had to support the tranny, unbolt the tranny crossmember and slide it back and then I could wiggle the pan out while sloshing fluid all over me.
Once I got the pan off, filter change was easy. If I recall correctly, make sure that you get the plastic bushing ( greensih color, I think )out of where the filter slides into. I used one of those dental picks (don't tell the wife
) to carefully pull it out. Put the new bushing on the new filter, slide into place. Cleaned out the pan, check to make sure it was flat, and then put new gasket on the pan. The holes in the gasket were tight for the bolts, so I pressed some of the bolts through and it held the gasket in place. Don't over torque the bolts and just tightned them up evenly. Fill with fluid and check level when the engine is up to temp. Anybody elses take? Good luck.
Also it would be good to get a manual. If you don't want to buy one, the library often has one for checkout. That way you know you did it right.

Hmm, if I have to support the tranny and remove the cross member I might just have my brother do it. Thanks for all the info though. I would much rather have an experienced mechanic do it than me just winging it. Considering it's not my car.
