I thought it was supposed to fit??

I got %75 completed on the TH350 to 700R4 swap last night before I ran into a snafu/~!
I had gone out and gotten a +member from an 89 3.1 auto(It should be the same as a V8) so I dont have to use the homemade one I used last swap. I got the tranny stabbed and went to put the +member on and it wouldent fit I cant even fit it on the frame, the +member isnt large enough...
What gives here?? Did they change the width of the frame?? I'm going to use the relocation holes I drilled last time to use the 200c +member with the 700r but man thats a pain to get the bolts up in there. So does anyone know what went wrong here?
Thanks
SSC

Tranny no fit makes owner have a fit

Sorry to hear about that headache. By all rights, it should fit without utter demolition. Perhaps someone had modified this vehicle before... Need more details to be helpful.

I dont know, everything on both cars looked fine. I'm just going to use the 200c +member and use the holes I made last time I went this route. Worst thing is I paid $15 for the cross member, cleaned/painted it so I cant even try to get a refund. Yea I know $15 but it all counts.

The xmember I got from the junk yard is 3in shorter than the 200c one

The bolt pattern for the '82 is further forward since the 200 is shorter then the 700. On my 82 I was able to use the rearward bolts on the crossmember and drill holes for the 700 mount.

Thanks for the replys, I dont know, the $15 700r4 crossmember sits in the corner unused. Last time I drilled it the same as you and caught the last two bolts. For some reason this tranny sat awkward and the other was one fine ( I did this swap before and the tranny cooked) I ended up having to move the passenger side back even more and I dident want to risk stress on the frame so I had to tack weld it I just hope this tranny lasts for a long time. its just wierd how the 700r4 Xmember doesent sit in my frame at any posistion. Nothing is ever easy.

My solution

I swapped in a t-5 in my 82 and I juts modified the crossmember with a piece of 1/4" plate. Heres a pic that should explain it.

I'm afraid Steve is right. The crossmember for 84-92 is different than an 82 or 83 crossmember. I remember reading this somewhere before and made sure I got the right one when I went searching... :nono:
